Concerning Violence was awarded with the Swedish Film Award (Guldbaggen) for Best Documentary 2014.
Director Göran Hugo Olsson was at the ceremony to receive the award.
Watch the live stream of the ceremony here (Göran's acceptance speech at 58:50).
Göran Hugo Olsson's profound essay doc aspires to upset in the truest sense. As its vintage footage of the cruelties of colonial life shocks and disgusts, its narration -- excerpts from Frantz Fanon's thundering 1961 text The Wretched of the Earth -- demands that Western viewers fundamentally upset their conceptions of everything. A commanding indictment of the exploitative nature of geopolitics, and of Europe's and the U.S.'s abuse of native peoples around the world, Concerning Violence pairs up hard truths from Fanon -- Lauryn Hill reads his words, each blunt and burning like a cigarette she's putting out in your ear -- with damnable scenes shot in colonized countries in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s.
There are revelations here for everyone, but this definitely should be seen by every white American who shares MLK quotes on Facebook to tell black Americans to stop protesting.

On their way home by bike through a deserted industrial area, a mother and her son starts to talk about what happened when our dream of eternal economic growth collided with the peak in global oil production. Sweden's best film magazine has presented its year-best list for 2013. On spot 2 for Swedish films is Belleville Baby and on spot 4 is After You (Efter dig).

Göran Hugo Olsson's feature documentary Concerning Violence has been officially selected to screen at 2014's Sundance Film Festival.
The film will have its international premiere at the festival taking place from January 16th-26th, in the World Cinema Documentary Competition.
Concerning Violence is based on newly discovered, powerful archival material documenting the most daring moments in the struggle for liberation in the Third World, accompanied by classic text from The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon.
Hip hop artist Ms. Lauryn Hill will narrate the upcoming documentary "Concerning Violence", a new film by Göran Hugo Olsson.
Ms. Hill began working on the voice recording in October, shortly after her release from the US prison where she had serving a three-month sentence.
"Concerning Violence" is based on recently discovered archive material from the Swedish Television archives which depicts the boldest moments in the struggle for liberation from colonial rule in Africa. This powerful footage is combined with text from Frantz Fanon’s landmark book The Wretched of the Earth.
After You (Efter dig) by Marius Dybwad Brandrud wins the Nordic:Dox competition for Best Nordic film at CPH:Dox Film Festival
Jury statement: "After You is a documentary about the death of a family member, shot with a combination of simplicity and sophistication reminiscent of an Ozu film. The film-maker's carefully composed images provide us with a sense of the mundane details that surround personal loss; but they also leave space for us to relate the film to our own experiences. We give this award in recognition of a film that provides a model for how to represent traumatic subjects, while still remaining thoughtful, unintrusive, and humble."
At the closing gala of the Stockholm Film Festival, Fia-Stina Sandlund received the feature length grant of 5.5 million SEK to make the Story production She's Wild Again Tonight
The motivation of the Jury: "A post-modern, metafictional, slightly absurd re-make of Strindberg's Miss Julie (Fröken Julie). The film takes place in a contemporary New York apartment in which the actors play heightened versions of themselves. Alexandra Dahlström (as Miss Julie) and Jens Lekman (as Jean) meet to reenact the play to Lekmans' music."
Efter dig (After You) has its theatrical premiere tomorrow at Zita, Stockholm
It will be shown in Folkets Bio's cinemas all over Sweden. More about the film, trailer + tickets can be found at Folkets Bios webpage.
It can also be seen at Östra Kapellet, Alla Helgons dag on November 2nd 16.30. More information here.

Mia Engberg's documentary Belleville Baby was awarded with the International Feature Dox prize at Dokufest in Prizren, Kosovo.
Belleville Baby was screened alongside 106 international films in competition at Dokufest, which ran from August 17th - 25th. Director Mia Engberg and producer Tobias Janson attended and held a masterclass on the film.
The jury motivated:
“The jury selected this film for its masterly direction, taking its audience on an emotional forensic journey with a startling use of images, fragments, and layers of sound. It becomes an open discussion of cinematic narrative forms questioning the way in which we each construct our own memories through stories, part truth, part invention. The jury gives the International DOX prize to Mia Engberg’s Belleville Baby.”
Find the full list of Dokufest winners on the festival's website.
Marius Dybwad Brandrud's film After You (Efter dig) will be one of the main screenings at the international Film Studies conference Visible Evidence XX at Filmhuset in Stockholm this weekend.
The film screening, organized in collaboration with Cinemateket, will be followed by a discussion between the filmmaker and Prof. Michael Renov, University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Visible Evidence XX attracts scholars from all over the world, and the four-day conference is celebrating its 20th year in Stockholm.
From the program of Visible Evidence XX: "Efter Dig shows a portrait of Marius’ mother. Everyday routine and habitual gestures meet with the unique and challenging experience of caring for a loved one (Marius grandfather) during his last months. Static, lingering framings bring attention to gestures, performativity, as well as to moments of telling silence. The filmmaker is very present in his project of framing and observing. ‘Autho-ethnography’ and ‘embodied observation’ are notions that I associate with the film. Efter Dig seems to transform into a process of enactment, which depends increasingly on the mutual collaboration and understanding of the filmmaker and his subject. The small everyday gestures, the tiniest shifts of expression in Mrs. Dybwad’s face recall the affective impact of framing and duration in moving images."

The feature documentary by Mia Engberg continues to be met by praise and moved audiences at international screenings, most recently at Rooftop Films in New York.
"After Belleville Baby screened in Seattle Film Festival I got a wonderful letter from someone in the audience who wanted to tell me about his own memories. This happens every time the film shows actually, same in Europe, people feel personally connected somehow and want to tell their own stories. I never had that with my previous films. I guess we all have a Vincent somewhere in the past. Someone lost and loved who stayed in our memory."

Filmmaker Frössén has followed de la Cour for four years and has captured the musician's reflections on living with a disease that he has kept secret for most of his life, and which has largely influenced the dark and moving music he makes.
Way Out West will take place on the 8-10th of August 2013.

On Tuesday April 23rd at 9.55pm, Moon Rider had its Swedish TV premiere in SVT1 Dox.
Moon Rider is a coming-of-age story about the bike rider Rasmus Quaade. The film follows young Rasmus’ struggle to become a professional rider, a rough and winding road through hell and back.
Shot on fragile Super8 and raw helmet-cam, it is a journey seen from the inside of a young man's head - it is a personal story entrusted to the spectator by Rasmus himself from his intimate diary. Rasmus has proven to have an extra ordinary talent for riding, but even if Rasmus’ physical abilities are extra ordinary and build for cycling, his mind is build for thinking. His constant reflections about life and death becomes his biggest obstacle in reaching his goal of becoming a World Champion. In order to win, he has to empty his head completely, but how do you clear your head, when every thought is a step in the wrong direction? The film paints an honest and heartbreaking picture of the extreme and lonely life of a young championship rider.
"An impressive first feature" - Indiewire
"It's not seen before, that the story is told from the inside. An extremely strong and vibrating film" - Jørgen Leth

Michel Wenzer's At Night I Fly received the Tempo Documentary Award 2012 at the Tempo Documentary Festival last weekend. The jury's verdict:
"A both moving and disturbing film, with intelligent and poetic interpretation, which highlights the themes of humanity, acceptance, and the right of all individuals to tell their story. Unsentimental yet emotionally and with art's power as a red, strong thread, the film manages to show a new side of a world which we thought was over-exploited on film."
Other awards that were given out included the Stefan Jarl International Documentary Award ('5 Broken Cameras', Emad Burnat & Guy Davidi) and the Tempo Short Award ('The Quiet One', Emelie Wallgren & Ina Holmqvist). For a full list of winners, see here.

"Director Michel Wenzer’s “At Night I Fly” opens on a tantalizing note. Upon entering California’s New Folsom Prison, a level-four maximum-security facility, Wenzer and his crew are told there’s a ‘no exchange policy.’ Which means? “No one can be released in exchange for you if you were to be taken hostage,” the warden says."

Variety about the film: "Well-crafted docu ´Love During Wartime´ uses the story of Jewish dancer Jasmin Avissar and Muslim artist Osama Zatar (aka "Assi") to examine this little-discussed fallout from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict... Broadcasters, fests, Jewish-interest and human-rights events should take note... Intimate production package feels as warm as its subjects."

The Guardian praises Am I Black Enough For You
"This year's standout was Am I Black Enough for You (pictured, 2009, Drakes Avenue, E) the story of Philadelphia soul legend Billy Paul. Having achieved mainstream success with "Me and Mrs Jones", Paul horrified his "cross-over" fans with the radical broadside that gives this DVD its name, which promptly relegated him to outsider status. Years later, artists such as Schoolly D (who features here) helped to reclaim him as a lost icon of black power, although the bittersweet battle between principle and opportunity is left unresolved in this engrossing portrait."
